This year is already shaping up to be a good one for Canada. The New York Times recently awarded Canada the number one spot on its 52 Places to Go in 2017, coincidentally, the same year the country is turning 150. To further celebrate its 150th anniversary, Canada will be offering free Parks Canada Discovery passes to anyone, not just Canadians, who wishes to visit one or all the national parks and nature reserves located throughout its 13 provinces and territories. The pass is also good for national marine conservation areas and historic sites scattered across the country.
Canada has 47 national parks, located on the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic coasts, representing natural landscapes and phenomena that occur in Canada’s 39 natural regions. The most popular of Canada’s national parks are Banff and Jasper.
Beginning on January 1, 2017, families can obtain a free, multi-use park pass online, which is good through December 31. According to the website, only one Discovery Pass per car is needed to enter the national parks, conservation areas or historic sites; however, please keep in mind the pass is only accepted at national historic sites which are operated by Parks Canada, and camping fees are not included.
