How I Fell Into Mobility: A Career in Communication

I don't think anyone can honestly say they knew the relocation industry existed before they accepted their first job supporting some function of the mobility process. I am quite certain I don't know anyone who went to college to pursue a degree in relocation. My early assumption about relocating was that people gathered up a few of their closest friends--preferably those with large vehicles--packed up their belongings in old boxes, and drove from one location to the next. Little did I know there was an entire world dedicated to the managed move of a relocating employee, and I was doing it all wrong!

I was an English literature major in college, with a minor--very minor!--in communications, looking forward to the prospect of one day teaching and, more importantly, enjoying summers off. Clearly, my plan did not involve seeking a job in the mobility industry--mostly because I was clueless as to its existence.

Instead, this path was started by my steadfast university guidance counselor, who felt strongly that I should gain corporate exposure and real-world business experience through a summer internship. That push led to my proverbial "fall" into relocation--one that I'm sure many of us are all too familiar with in some way, shape, or form. What I failed to realize at the time was that this would turn out to be a career, which has continued to offer new challenges, opportunities, and personal growth.

And so, nearly 20 years ago I began a new profession in appraisal. I was fortunate that the company I worked for became the foundation of Dwellworks, further diversifying my exposure to the industry. Through the years I became driven to increase my knowledge of how relocation works as a whole, and now I apply that understanding to my role in global account management.

While at first I doubted that my literature and communications background would bring much value to this industry, I have found that so much of what we do is about communication, transparency, and customer service, and my education has been of great benefit to me. The ever-changing set of challenges the industry presents daily has kept me engaged; the culture, values, and experience gained through working for a great organization has shaped my career; and the privilege of meeting amazing, worldly individuals has created connections that will last a lifetime.
