From now until August, each week, two of our summer interns will be highlighted as they reflect upon their experiences and work while employed with Dwellworks.
This week, we put the spotlight on Allie Brydell, our Destination Services intern in Detroit and Hope Martin, our Human Resources intern in Cleveland, as they write about their first week of work and their personal experiences relocating.
How I Had Fun at Work This Week

With this being my first week as an intern at Dwellworks, there have been many new experiences and a lot of fun ones. The fun began on my first day. We were greeted warmly with goodie bags from our managers, full of snacks and notebooks and pens, and even a water bottle, plus other little things that would be useful for our summer here at Dwellworks.
We were then given a tour around the three floors we have here at the Detroit office. This is the coolest office I have ever been in, and it made me even more excited for the job. The modern, yet homey look of it made me feel comfortable here while keeping a professional vibe as well. We even got chicken and waffles as our first breakfast in the office! The fun continued at lunch when we interns and a few of the workers walked to a nearby Mexican restaurant. This helped us all become acquainted with each other as well as eat some very yummy food.
Every day, there have been events in the office, such as massages during the lunch hour to allow us to take a break from work and relax for a few minutes. I think it is very important to incorporate some fun into the office and to keep a positive and upbeat vibe in the workplace. Dwellworks does a great job of keeping that balance, and that has been one of my favorite things about working here so far.
What I Have Learned From Relocating

Before my twenties, I relocated six times and all to different states. In addition to relocating six times, I went to two different high schools in two different states. High school can be a tough time for kids to leave their friends and go to another school in hopes to find new friends, but this wasn’t the case for me. I thoroughly enjoy moving because you get to meet new people and change up the scenery.
Moving this many times allowed me to mature faster, become independent, and grow as a person. Every move forced me to make new friends and taught me how to adjust. As a young adult, I think that relocating can also help build your network. My advice is that everyone should take the chance and relocate. Relocating can help an individual mature, be more independent, and teach people how to acclimate to new opportunities.
Along with me realizing that I have grown as a person, the experiences I have encountered with these companies was immense. These companies try their best to have a smooth transition and be understanding, but they always care about their customers, which made the experience enjoyable. In the end, I’m not telling anyone to relocate the same amount of times I have, but to take a chance. For all you know, you might love the change!
