Spotlight On: Marlborough, Wiltshire

Marlborough is located in the beautiful but sparsely populated county of Wiltshire. An ancient town recorded in the Domesday Book, it later became famous as the place where coins were minted, Tudor kings hunted, and coaches from London stopped to feed and water their horses. Although life in this affluent modern town today bears little resemblance to its historical past, Marlborough remains sought-after for its beautiful High Street, attractive architecture, famous college and friendly community.

Marlborough has a cosmopolitan buzz. Excellent shopping, a thriving café culture, ancient coaching inns and a twice weekly market selling local produce give it a vibrant feel. It hosts a literature festival every September, and Savernake Forest, covering over 4,000 acres, is perfect for runners and dog walkers. Despite being surrounded by glorious countryside, Marlborough is far from isolated. It takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes by train to London Paddington from Pewsey station (15 mins drive away) and London is just over an hour by train from Swindon (25 mins drive away).

For house-hunters, there is a rich variety of housing stock — red brick terraces, riverside developments, large Victorian properties, modern homes and thatched cottages.
