London Docklands, on the River Thames, is one of London’s most historic and character-filled areas. It consists of approximately 9 square miles of riverside real estate in east and southeast London that was formerly part of the Port of London, (at one time, the world's largest port). Having suffered greatly from bomb damage during the war, much of this area has since been regenerated and is now popular with employees of nearby Canary Wharf.

Wapping, on the north bank of the River Thames, is unique - its residential streets can be very peaceful yet it sits within a stone’s throw of London's main financial centres - the City and Canary Wharf. One of London’s hidden gems, this quiet part of the capital has something for everyone.

Property in Wapping and London's Docklands

If you live in and around the Docklands it is likely that you will have an apartment. There are two distinctive styles - riverside warehouse conversions or contemporary new-builds. Warehouse conversions are sought-after by those who love character. They usually feature exposed brickwork, beams and the original loading bay doors. If this is your style, head for Shad Thames, Butler’s Wharf, St Katherine Docks and Wapping High Street. In contrast, new and ultra-modern developments have also sprung up along this section of the river offering luxury accommodation, porters, on-site gyms, underground parking and balconies. For this style, start your search at Canary Riverside, West India Quay, Pan Peninsula and Neo Bankside.

Entertainment

Wapping is steeped in history. In fact, you can still enjoy a pint in one of London’s oldest pubs here, The Prospect of Whitby, dating back to 1543. At the heart of London’s industrial heritage, the regeneration of this area has been largely completed. It is a study of contrasts – The iconic Tower of London is set against the striking modern skyline of Canary Wharf, the “Gherkin” and the Shard.

For nightlife, there is no shortage of sophisticated and fashionable pubs, bars and restaurants, including Conran’s, Le Pont de la Tour, The Chop House and Gordon Ramsay’s gastropub ‘The Narrow’.

Transportation

Wapping is ideally situated for the City, and Canary Wharf is within walking or cycling distance. The Jubilee line at Canary Wharf runs between Stratford, Bond Street and the West End. The Circle and District lines are easily accessible at Tower Hill, while the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) provides services from Tower Gateway to Bank in just 6 minutes.

Overground services from Wapping run south to Croydon and Crystal Palace; north to Islington; and east to Watford. City Airport is 25 minutes away.
