It has recently been brought to our attention that in the state of Virginia, the automobile requirements for the practical portion of the driving exam have changed. It is no longer permissible to utilize a rental car for the practical exam or road test, and from our understanding, this is a state-wide change. Although this change is not yet reflective on the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles website, it has been our experience at the local offices that this new requirement is already in practice. Going forward, it will be important to inform Virginia transferees that they must purchase/lease a car, prior to the exam or utilize the services of a professional driving school for assistance with the on-road driving skills test. Members of the Dwellworks Consultant Network have been advised against offering the transferee their personal vehicle to complete the practical exam due to safety and liability concerns.
