For many, the thought of moving is overwhelming, and some of us may need a little more assistance than others. How will you know if you need a little extra care? Well, we have put together a short list of items that are good indicators additional time could be beneficial. While this is by no means an exhaustive list, after a decade of experience delivering Destination Services these are a few of our most common indicators.
Family
We thought we would start with our most common indicator: Family. Moving is stressful enough, and the last thing anyone wants is added stress from unhappy family members. Depending on how many bedrooms you need for your children, finding a large enough space can be a challenge in some cities, but it is possible with enough planning. The type of school (international, private, magnet, International Baccalaureate, etc.) you’re interested in for your children is a large factor as well, and you may need some extra assistance finding the perfect fit. Also, childcare that aligns with your values and babysitting/au pair arrangements take time and careful selection to organize. A Destination Consultant can also help you find specific extracurricular activities or language training programs for your child to help them feel engaged in their new community.
Eldercare is another consideration when moving to a new location. You will want to make sure that services are available nearby, whether you are seeking in-home assistance or a live-in arrangement.
Pets
For many, pets are a big part of their family, and making sure that our loyal pets are happy and cared for is a key factor in the home-finding process.
There are a handful of breeds that some rental spaces may be reluctant to accommodate or refuse to allow on the property. Additionally, insurance coverage for these breeds may be denied. Some of the breeds included on this list are also large in size, and their owners may prefer a greater floorplan and a fenced-in yard for proper exercising.
If you have unusual animals, such as livestock, fish, reptiles, or birds, it’s likely that you’re seeking a unique property as well. For tanks and aquariums, even if your rental space allows it, you may have difficulty cleaning the system. It is also important that you contact a veterinarian in the area before you move to make sure that your animals can be properly cared for in your destination.
Space
You know what they say about moving…the most important thing is “location, location, location!” When space is a particular concern for your situation, you’ll want to be in frequent contact with your Destination Consultant as early as possible. In metropolitan cities, space is limited. In more rural areas where space is plentiful, the distance from everywhere else you need to go, like work and the grocery store, may be greater than you are used to.
Accessible structures for the disabled feature wider doorways, ramps, and grab bars, among other amenities. Searching efficiently is crucial; working with your Destination Consultant can help streamline needs for disabilities, such as permitting a guide dog in a no-pet rental space. Or, if you have other particular needs for space for things like art collections or multiple cars, you will want to discuss this with your Destination Consultant to see what options are available in your destination.
During your first point of contact, try to be as thorough as possible when filling out any forms or discussing your concerns. Even if you think your situation is impossible to accommodate, we will do all we can to help you find a solution.
